What causes shift to lock?
An open circuit in the shift interlock electrical system can cause the shifter to become stuck in Park if the open circuit interrupts communications between the brake light switch or the ignition switch and the interlock solenoid. If power is present, the shifter interlock solenoid is bad.

Grip the cable near each derailleur and give a few tugs to make sure the cable is connected inside the unit. Solenoids are metal coils that are shaped like cylinders and they allow you to move the gearshift with ease. When you press the brake pedal, a signal is received by the solenoid and this causes it to release a mechanical lock that makes it possible to move the shift.
